Distribution Project: Files To Distribute

What To Distribute

Our policy on distributing OpenOffice.org software derives from discussions that took place in the Mirrors Project. The issue:

  • What files to distribute
  • How to collate the files so that they may be efficiently distributed

In the case of OpenOffice.org, this was a particularly vexing problem, for new files, new localizations, new platforms are constantly being added.

Today we distribute either the extended dataset (incl. /extended), the main set (/stable, /contrib, /localized, /developer) or a selected subset based on the categories mentioned below. We keep the size of the main set (Category 1) limited to max. 30 GB. The extended dataset currently is about 100 GB in size.

If you are interested in more details about the subdirectories grouped in categories read on.

An interim solution was to establish four categories, each with its set of files. Each category comprises a set of files from the following directories: /stable, /developer, /contrib, /localized, /extended.

What the directories refer to

  • Stable: At least the two most recent builds. e.g.: /2.3.1, /2.3.0. Each directory includes the binaries and source.
  • Developer: Binaries (and sometimes source) for the developer builds: /SRC680_myyy
  • Localized: Binaries for localized files: /de, /fr, .... These have been tested and proven
  • Contrib: Un-QA'd binaries, dictionaries, and other related files
  • Extended: Un-QA'd localized binaries and other related files

Archive Servers

We also have archive servers for mirroring legacy and rarely-used content. See more details here.
